September Forum: What is Spirituality

What does it mean to live a spiritual life? How do ordinary practices—eating, creating, reflecting, and writing—open us to the presence of God?

In this series, we will explore the question “What is spirituality?” through diverse lenses and voices. Each week, guest speakers will guide us into different expressions of the spiritual life:

  • Art and Spirituality – How creativity draws us into mystery and meaning
  • Food and Spirituality – How meals and shared tables nourish body and soul
  • The Desert Mothers and Fathers – Ancient wisdom for modern seekers
  • Poetry and Spirituality – The power of words to awaken the spirit

Join us on Sunday mornings as we discover how spirituality weaves through the practices of daily life and the long traditions of faith. All are welcome—whether you are exploring spirituality for the first time or deepening a lifelong journey.

Bible Study | LL Westminster Classroom | Begins September 7

Led by Dr. Edward Bolen

Rescuing Revelation: Making Sense of the Last Book of the Bible

Sunday Afternoon

Natural Spirituality | Library | Noon

Emmanuel’s Natural Spirituality program began in 1991 and provides a context for exploring inner work by working with dreams and synchronicity. While this is relatively new for our time, it is not new for Christianity. People of the Old and New Testaments were led and enriched by their dreams, as we are today. The program is based on Jungian concepts of the unconscious in a Christian framework and explores the images and metaphors that come to us in our dreams. Journey Group members help each other gain insight into their individual lives by unfolding the symbolic language of their dreams. A light lunch will be served. The group is open and all those interested are welcome to attend either in person or via Zoom. For more information, please contact Heidi Simmonds at heidihsimmonds@gmail.com.

Monday

Bible Study | LL Coventry Room | 10:00a.m. | Summer break June - August

The weekly lectionary Bible study exegetes the scripture passages for the upcoming Sunday service. We share responsibility for facilitating the group. The group is lively and engaged in hearing how scripture is informing our lives in our context. All are welcome. Drop in whenever you have time. The readings for each week can be found here:  https://www.lectionarypage.net/

Centering Prayer | Chapel | 6:00p.m. | Begins September 9

Centering Prayer is a method designed to facilitate the development of contemplative prayer by preparing our faculties to receive this gift. It presents ancient Christian wisdom teachings in an updated form. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer; rather it casts a new light and depth of meaning on them. It is at the same time a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. Our Centering Prayer group meets in the Chapel from 6:00p.m. - 7:00p.m.

Sacred Ground Book Study   Vestry Conference Room | 1:00p.m. | Begins September 11

Join us for a six-week Sacred Ground book discussion as we read Isabel Wilkerson’s acclaimed work The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration. This beautifully written narrative history traces the journeys of three individuals who left the South during the Great Migration, weaving together their stories with broader themes of race, resilience, and hope in America.

Our conversations will invite us to reflect not only on the historical realities of the Great Migration, but also on how its legacies shape our present. Together, we will engage Wilkerson’s storytelling through the lens of Sacred Ground, creating a space for learning, honest conversation, and spiritual reflection.

All are welcome—whether you have read the book before or are opening it for the first time. We will meet on Thursdays from 1:00p.m. – 2:00p.m. in-person and on Zoom. If you are interested in joining on Zoom, please email rev.katie@emmanuelathens.org.
