The Emmanuel Thrift House, the oldest bargain store in the area, has been providing good buys and funds for charitable projects for over 55 years. It has been staffed completely by volunteers since 1950 when the Women of the Church opened the shop behind a downtown garage. Since then it has survived eight moves, one fire, and a robbery attempt. In 1997, the shop came home to the Emmanuel campus where it is stocked with donated housewares, shoes, accessories, books and, of course, clothes of all kinds.
The Thrift House’s outreach is widespread. On Mondays and Tuesdays the workers honor referrals from charitable organizations and provide clothing to people who have emergencies or who are homeless. The rest of the week the volunteers sell merchandise to the general public. Each year they donate approximately $25,000.00 to $30,000.00 to local non-profit organizations, to the Haiti Mission and to Emmanuel projects. The Thrift House Board and volunteers disburse their profits as outreach grants; they make funding recommendations to the Vestry which has final approval
The Thrift House is located at 450 Prince Avenue (right next to the church), and the phone number is 706-543-7047.
