EMMANUEL EPISCOPAL CHURCH

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING APPROVED MINUTES

DECEMBER 7, 2003

Father Courtney opened the annual meeting with a prayer. He welcomed everyone to the meeting, noting that the only action that would be taken was that of electing five Vestry members.

Father Courtney recognized Carol Winthrop, Chair of the Nominating Committee. Carol thanked nominating committee members: Lee Gaby, Duncan Krause, Cindy McAlister, Peg Wood, Debra Lassiter, Nancy McDuff, Tom Odom and Mark Stewart. Carol introduced the following candidates for vestry as they came to the front of the church: Lee Albright, Robin Bewley, Butch Bush, Allison Clements, Claire Gaus, Cliff Panell, and Brian Tison. Heidi Simmonds and David Woodruff were absent and excused. Carol thanked the candidates for their willingness to stand for the Vestry and noted that the honor was in being asked to stand.

Father Courtney asked for nominations from the floor. There being none, he declared the nominations closed.

Father Courtney introduced Bob Bowen who explained the voting procedure. He and the other tellers (Peg Wood, Jim Bowers, Diane Wahlers, Steve Hall, Ken Turnipseed and Beth Shaw) passed the ballots for the vote to the congregation. The ballots were collected and the tellers retired to the parlor for a count.

Duncan Krause, Chair of the Finance Committee, reported that Emmanuel closed out the 2002 fiscal year in January of 2003 in excellent financial shape, with a modest budget surplus for the year of $25,181.00. At the end of the 3rd quarter, we are lagging slightly in pledge income (less than 1% behind the 7-year average for pledge income at this point in the year), ahead of budget for recordable contributions, and slightly over budget with expenses, primarily due to maintenance costs, including the new smoke and fire detection system.

Duncan thanked all the members of the Finance Committee and asked if there were any questions.

Balfour Hunnicutt asked the amount of Emmanuel’s pledge to the Diocese . The amount is between 60 and 65 thousand.

Cindy McAlister, Senior Warden, asked the Vestry to come forward and introduce themselves and explain some of their duties as a Vestry member. Cindy thanked our hostesses, Cathy Cofer and Frances Doherty, for the wonderful breakfast prior to the annual meeting. Cindy thanked Lee Gaby for serving as Junior Warden and retiring vestry members Peg Wood for serving on the Finance and AGM Committees, Carol Winthrop for serving on the Education Commission and chairing the Vestry Nominating Committee, and Duncan Krause for chairing the Finance Committee and the WR Screening Committee. Cindy stated that she is thankful for Father Courtney’s three years with Emmanuel. After introductions, Cindy and the other vestry members present: Laura Cofer, David Gossett, Duncan Krause, David Kidd, Larry McLeod, Carol Winthrop, Naomi Norman, Terri Tillman, Joe Napoli, Jay Shinn and Lee Gaby opened the floor for questions. Debra Harden was excused.

Cindy asked everyone to remember Debra Harden in their prayers following her jaw surgery.

Suzanne Bennett mentioned that she had received the Vestry Nomination slate late and felt she had not had enough time to study and make a decision. Carol Winthrop responded that the slate was in the last "Tower” and that their photos and autobiographies were posted in a timely manner and wondered if there had been a mix up with Suzanne’s mail.

Rustin McAlister inquired about the status of Long Range Planning. Jay Shinn responded that, over the next year, the vestry will have the task of deciding what to do with the properties. Lisa Yarn asked if the Vestry plans to have a meeting specifically devoted to LRP. Jay responded that the meeting has been set for December 10, 2003. Dev Weeks requested a summation of what was going to be discussed. Bob Wood has notes posted on the web site concerning LRP. Lisa Yarn stated that all comments and all written plans submitted will be in a bound book in the office.

Cindy thanked Dee for her hard work and dedication as Secretary to the Vestry.

Jay Shinn invited anyone interested to tour the property after the service today.

Lane Norton announced that there will be a Creche Festival in the Common Room Saturday, December 13th from 1-5pm and Sunday, December 14th from 9am to 1pm. Creches can be accepted on Friday between the hours of 3-8 pm. The Youth Group will be selling Nativities and props will be set up on the stage for people to take Christmas pictures.

Suzanne Bennett, Archives Committee, requested parishioners bring things relating to the history of Emmanuel to the Archives Committee.

Father Courtney recognized Senior Warden, Cindy McAlister, and thanked her for her leadership and support.

Father Courtney called for a ten minute recess to wait for the results of the First Ballot.

Bob Bowen announced the need for a second ballot. Elected were Lee Albright, Allison Clements and David Woodruff. Those to be voted upon on the second ballot are Robin Bewley, Butch Bush and Brian Tison.

Those elected on the second ballot were Butch Bush and Brian Tison.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted.

Dee Forester

Secretary to the Vestry
