EMMANUEL EPISCOPAL CHURCH

APPROVED VESTRY MINUTES

WEDNESDAY,

THE MEETING HOUSE

JUNE 26, 2002

VESTRY PRESENT: Bob Wood, Peg Wood, Father Peter Courtney, Phillip Cofer, Joe Napoli, Chris Saye, Terri Tillman, Carol Winthrop, Duncan Krause and Cindy McAlister.

NON-VESTRY PRESENT: Mother Mandy Brady and Dee Forester.

WELCOME

Father Courtney opened the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and led the Vestry in singing “I Am the Vine.”

DEVOTION

Peg Wood shared thoughts on time. She asked the question “Is time our King?” She asked the Vestry to ponder whether they are on God’s time or people time and closed with a prayer.

FINANCIAL

Bob Wood presented the financial report in the absence of Clay Gilbert. The Committee had tracked the income this year vs. the past six years. They took an average of the pledges and found that income in coming in as expected. Expenses are under control in all areas. Some Parish programs have not yet spent money allocated to them in the budget. The bank balance is higher than at this time last year according to Treasurer Johnny Terrell.

Bob reported that progress is being made toward an audit. Clay Gilbert has interviewed two firms experienced in working with Episcopal Churches. These two firms will submit proposals to the Finance Committee.

There will be a new Line Item in the budget to fund Joe Green who has been hired to temporarily perform Sexton duties due to the illness of Bobby Pittard.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Committee reports accepted were from the Education Commission and the Architecture, Gifts and Memorials Committee.

The Facilities Committee noted that the two houses have been looked at with an eye to moving and renovating them and the Cobb House has been looked at with an eye to renovation for occupancy. More information will come to the Vestry later from this Committee.

Father Courtney called to Vestry’s attention to the Employee Handbook. He has done a complete review of the handbook and made some fine tuning changes without any major changes. It is the Policy Statement of Emmanuel Church and Father Courtney asked that the Vestry adopt it as a working document. Peg Wood noted that it includes the professional standards for the Day School Staff but does not include a policy on our response to University of Georgia students and researchers who want to do projects with the Day School. Peg Wood and Duncan Krause will work with Amy Wraga, Emmanuel Episcopal Day School Director, to insert language to the effect that the Human Subjects Committee standards at UGA which comply with federal regulations protecting children always be observed. When this policy statement has been prepared it will be brought to the Vestry for them to adopt. Father Courtney called for the question. The Vestry unanimously approved the Employee Handbook for Emmanuel Church as a working document.
