| EMMANUEL EPISCOPAL CHURCH APPROVED VESTRY MINUTES WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 2002 THE MEETING HOUSE VESTRY PRESENT: Father Peter Courtney, Bob Wood, Walter Jarrett, Jan Wheeler, Phillip Cofer, Cindy McAlister, Debra Harden, Terri Tillman Brewer, Joe Napoli and Clay Gilbert. NON-VESTRY PRESENT: Dee Forester. WELCOME Father Courtney opened with a prayer. Joe Napoli sang Cantor and the Vestry sang the verses of “Veni Sancte Spiritus”. DEVOTION Terri Tillman Brewer first heard the Prayer of St. Francis when she was eleven years old. Her devotion came from the book “ Make Me An Instrument of Your Peace”. Forgiving oneself is so important and until we forgive ourselves we cannot see clearly to forgive others. The greatest gift is the gift of forgiveness. Terri ended the devotion with the Prayer of St. Francis. FINANCIAL REPORT Clay Gilbert asked the Vestry to look at the Summary Landscape provided in the Agenda packet. The Summary shows Revenues (MTD) $ 102,540.91 and Expenses (MTD) $ 94,988.35. Pledges are above our prior year’s averages. Net income is ahead of budget by $ 42,000.00. The Finance Committee recommends to the Vestry to adopt the Emmanuel Episcopal Day School budget as proposed. Father Courtney called for the question. No second was needed. The proposed EEDS Budget was accepted unanimously. COMMITTEE REPORTS Walter Jarrett and the Facilities Committee are still seeking bids for the air conditioning for the kitchen. He reported that his Committee will meet with Barbara Black of Surber-Barber again the first week in June. Walter lead a discussion of renovation possibilities and noted that parking may need to be a completely separate project. Father Courtney noted the good report from Peg Wood and the Architecture, Gifts, and Memorials Committee. Joe Napoli announced that the families of the graduating senior acolytes will purchase liquid candles as a gift. Terri Tillman Brewer reported for the Communications Commission that ads have been updated for the newspaper showing the new summer schedule. ANNOUNCEMENTS Debra Harden announced a reception for Sarah Fisher will be June 30th and a purse will be collected. Lemonade on the Terrace will begin with the summer schedule June 2, 2002. Debra reported that Carol Winthrop is doing well but felt she still needed rest and was unable to attend tonight’s meeting. Cindy McAlister reported that the meeting for the Guild of the Christ Child was well attended and much interest has been shown and she is very optimistic that the group can be formed. Bob Wood announced that he has received no nominations for Delegates to the Council. Debra Harden passed along that she has had a request from a youth for a “Journey to Adulthood” van. Jan Wheeler asked where the flags are- Father Courtney will investigate. FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER Father Courtney shared travel plans. In June he will be attending the Association of Anglican Musicians Annual Meeting in Jackson, Mississippi. In July he hopes to attend a music reading Conference. In August, Peter will join Lutheran brothers and sisters for a retreat near Nashville. He has most recently completed work on a Shaker style quilt rack. Father Courtney gave $ 500.00 from the Rector’s Discretionary Fund to The Work of Our Hands for a drill press for Emmaus House. Peter says he is looking forward to welcoming Kat Baumgarner and that Sarah is making wonderful plans for her arrival and a smooth transition. John Hunnicutt is ill and in the hospital but needs no visitors. Debra Harden, as a parent of a youth, thanked the Youth Ministers for their great work. Jan Wheeler asked what had become of the Parents of Youth group. Cindy McAlister commented that the group hopes to reform and become active again. Father Courtney reported many donations for the air conditioner for the kitchen in honor of Hal and Betty Cofer. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.
