ALTAR GUILD

The Emmanuel Altar Guild is made up of 50 extremely dedicated and talented members of the parish. These wonderful gentlemen and ladies go about their tasks quietly and efficiently serving all the altar needs of the church — from weekday services to weddings, funerals and everything in between. We have many members serving multiple months instead of once a year and we have one member that is serving weekly.

Subcommittees of the Altar Guild include the Flower Committee and the Wedding Committee. The Flower group has twenty-something faithful and extremely talented members that work monthly shifts to create beautiful and colorful arrangements for the Altar and the new table at the back of the church. This group is chaired by Jenny Broadnax.

Flowers for regular services are funded by memorial donations as well as several bequests. There is a flower calendar just outside the parish office for parishioners to sign if they wish to place flowers in the church. The calendar for each new year is put up in January and you are welcome to sign up at any time.

The Wedding Committee is chaired by Joann Yates. This group of ladies handles all the weddings that occur at Emmanuel. Joann and committee are very dedicated to serving the needs of both Emmanuel and the brides. They attend the wedding rehearsal and the wedding day to make certain that things run smoothly for everyone.

Wedding flowers are provided by the bride and groom, but are always arranged by the Flower Committee.

If you would like to join the Altar Guild, Flower Guild, or Wedding Guild, please contact Debra Lassiter, Post Office Box 6073, Athens Georgia 30604, or call 706-540-2363. New members are always welcome.

BAPTISMAL BANNER COMMITTEE

The Baptismal Banner Committee creates the banners given to each newly baptized person at Emmanuel. Our first banners were presented at the baptisms on December 27, 1998.

Members of our committee: Ann Bretscher, Sherry Gaby, Mary Whithurst, Jean Hunnicutt, Patti Jones, Cindy McAlister, Nancy Woodruff, Gene Weeks, and JoAnn Yates. We are self supporting and our time is on a volunteer basis.

Our committee meets the first Thursday of each month. We cut, sew, and glue in order to assemble banners that are presented to those being baptized. We presented 13 banners from January through October of 2004.

We hope the banner will be hung in the home of the newly baptized person and remind them and their family of when they were sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ's own forever.

MUSIC PROGRAM

The music program at Emmanuel is composed of four choirs: St Cecelia (boys and girls ages 7-10), St Gregory (boys and girls ages 11-14), Schola Cantorum (adult men), and the Family Choir (mixed voices, ages 15 and up). The St Cecelia and St Gregory choirs each sing once a month at the 9:00am liturgy, and the Family Choir sings every Sunday at the 9:00am liturgy. Due to diminishing numbers, the Parish Choir, which once sang every Sunday at the 11:15am liturgy, has been disbanded and its members given the option of joining the Family Choir or the Schola. As an intermediate solution, the Schola was formed to provide music once a month for the 11:15am liturgy until such time as a mixed choir for that liturgy can be rebuilt.

September saw the introduction of a new curriculum for our youth choirs, the Royal School of Church Music's Voice for Life training scheme. The RSCM curriculum provides for a comprehensive music education with a special emphasis on singing and church music. Choristers learn about posture, breathing, diction, correct use of the voice, theory, repertoire, and the role of the choir in worship. Since the implementation of the new program, participation in the youth music program has increased from a total of seven last spring to our current enrollment of seventeen. I have been working with the St Gregory Choir, and Michael Brewer and Sharon Rockholt have been doing excellent work with the St Cecelia Choir.

Total participation in the music program has increased from thirty-one last spring to our current number of fifty. Due to the enthusiasm and dedication of these volunteers we have been able to undertake some remodeling and repair to the music building (still in progress), and have been preparing for two performances in December of the entire Vivaldi Gloria with orchestra, together with the choir of Friendship Presbyterian Church. Several of our choristers will also participate in the Diocesan Choir Festival in Macon in November.

Music cataloguing software has been purchased and installed on the music department’s computer with the goal of cataloguing our rather large music library, cross-referenced by composer, lyricist, publisher, season, scripture references, skill level, key, time signature, accompaniment, voicing, and lyrics.

USHERS

Close to one hundred Emmanuelites now serve as ushers. To each of them is offered our gratitude and appreciation. At each Sunday service and at special services throughout the year, ushers act as Emmanuel's "unofficial" greeters. They see that all have service bulletins, help with the collection of offering and getting it to the hank, provide assistance during communion, and secure the church after a service. They also stand ready to offer special needs assistance during the services, be it directions to the various parts of our church facilities or information about church programs. Ushers also provide our visitors with a warm welcome and an .invitation to return. Ushers come together a couple of times a year for fellow-ship, usually once in the fall and again in the spring.

Anyone desiring to serve as an usher need only call the church office. 'A follow up call will be made to answer questions. New ushers will become part of a team and then included in the next scheduling rotation. Scheduling typically occurs three times a year for the periods-September through December, January through May and June through August. Teams generally consist of 4-5 individuals.

All are cordially invited and welcome to serve. Please call the church office at 543-1294 or Chuck Galis at 546-7800 with questions.

WEDDING COMMITTEE

The members of the Wedding Committee meet with the bride to plan details of the wedding ceremony/sacrament. We assist the priest in directing the rehearsal, and assist with the mechanics of the wedding on the day of the ceremony.

Committee Members are Patti Curtis, Jean Hunnicutt, Jane Kidd, Ann Joye McLeod, Gene Weeks and JoAnn Yates.

In the year 2004 our committee will have assisted our priests with 7 services of the Celebration and Blessing of a Marriage. We meet with each bride several times to make certain there will be an organized and relaxed rehearsal. We communicate with the Flower and Altar Guilds and with Leslie De Haseth when acolytes are needed. Arriving about one hour before the ceremony, the director ensures that the wedding goes smoothly before and during the ceremony.
