|
The Resources Commission consists of the Architectural, Gifts, and Memorials Committee, the Archives Committee, the Facilities Committee, and the Guild of St. Francis. As can be seen by the names of the various committees within Resources, the charge to the Commission is to oversee Emmanuel's properties. Jay Shinn, Chair ARCHITECTURE, GIFTS, AND MEMORIALS (AGM) COMMITTEE AGM committee activities provide a tangible way for us to give thanks to God for special people or events in our lives. Your gift, large or small, will be a link in the continuous celebration of God's love at Emmanuel. Those remembered with memorial gifts between October 2003 and October 2004 are Kathleen Bonfoey, Fielding Bradford, Lois B. Cate, Barbara Coplin, Norma Crane, Patti Farber, Franklin Ferguson, Mary Nell Harris, Legare Hoge, William T. Millican, Jack Morse, Sam Nickerson, Pan Overstreet, Jack Payne, Dorothy Schacht, Richard Scott, Ralph Stephens, Sr., and Ann Tipton Memorial stones in the All Saints Terrace have been inscribed for Barbara Coplin, Norma Crane, and William Millican, The memorial credenza in memory of the Reverend Franklin Cole Ferguson, Rector of Emmanuel from 1974-1988, was placed in the Narthex and was blessed on Sunday, October 24, 2004. Drawings have been prepared to modify the steps to the lectern, with railings of brass and walnut. Design for a silver chalice in memory of Beth Parker is being prepared. A preliminary design for an aumbry in white marble has been approved. This is given in memory of Mary Nell Harris by Dr. Charlotte Leedy. Records of memorial gifts between 1978 and 2000 are being reproduced for the archives. A leather volume has been purchased for these records. AGM reviews for appropriateness all memorial submittals and forwards its recommendations to the Vestry for decision. The list of suitable memorials is in the appendix. Parishioners interested in giving a memorial are encouraged to contact the clergy or a member of the AGM committee. Committee members: Jenny Broadnax, Anna Dyer, Bobby Gibson, Larry McLeod, Allen Stovall, John Waters; Peg Wood, Chair ARCHIVES COMMITTEE The Archives Committee both preserves the historical records and valuable memorabilia of Emmanuel Church and manages the storage of current church records for the future. The Committee maintains a collection/retention schedule for archival records, governs the use of materials in the archives, and establishes the procedures which will best preserve the materials for future generations of clergy and parishioners. The shelf list of material in the archives continues to be expanded as new 'material is donated by parishioners and others. As anticipated, the archives is becoming the central repository for records retired by various components of the parish administration, including the Day School. The Archives Committee is working on creating a comprehensive schedule for retiring the current office files and a plan to preserve electronic files which continue to grow..We welcome new donations that reflect the history of Emmanuel Church and its many activities. FACILITIES COMMITTEE Over the past twelve months Emmanuel's properties have undergone little structural change but significant maintenance and repair. We are blessed with property, besides our magnificent church building, Parish House, and our Christian Connection, extending from our Outreach Building to the east to our Parish Life Building (the former Realty building) on our opposite border to the west and including the Cobb House at the top of Pope Street. The Outreach Building houses the Potter's House, (a ministry of the Atlanta Union Mission), Emmanuel Thrift House, and the Community Connection, a service organization offering the needy assistance in finding their way to and through various area public services. The Cobb House continues, through the Pope Street Association, to offer invaluable service to those dealing with the effects of substance abuse. There are 37 meetings each week serving around 200 people per day. The Cobb House is totally dedicated to this ministry. The Vestry earlier this year approved removal of the two houses on upper Pope Street from church property. The Property Use Master Planning (PUMP) committee has openly sought, received, and selected from those submitted a proposal to move the houses to another site. The Vestry has approved the committee's recommendations, and work is continuing. The Parish Life building offers comfortable space for vestry and committee meetings, the Natural Spirituality group, a menu of Bible study groups, and meetings of several other groups. Additionally, Emmanuel's library will soon be there. The Music Building, along with housing Emmanuel's music ministries, has an additional tenant. In the front of the building are local offices of the Georgia Legal Services Project, a public service advisory group offering the services of volunteer attorneys. Notable maintenance happenings of the year were a serious lightning strike and two break-ins. The lightning strike hit directly on the top of the northwest corner of the Bell Tower. It was powerful enough to fling large pieces of granite up to one hundred feet away, and to cause extensive damage to electrical, computer, and communications systems. The damage has mostly been repaired, there remaining only cosmetic repair in the Bell Tower vestibule. Two break-ins occurred this year, neither of any consequence in terms of theft. Cosmetic damage has been repaired, and a motion sensor alarm system added to the back side of the Christian Connection complex and the back of the Parish House. Much work has been done in the Potter's House. Electrical upgrades and new front doors as well as a new HVAC system and other improvements have been done this year. Additionally, the Potter's House is expanding their retail space into previously unused space in the rear of the building, and Emmanuel is cooperating in that effort. As with any large physical plant, the "maintenance engineering" is always a work in progress. The Facilities Chair particularly recognizes Jim Jacobson of the committee, and Melissa Fulcher, Director of Parish Administration, without whom the work would be much more difficult indeed. Jim Jacobson, Terri Tillman, Allen Stovall, Joe Napoli, Bob Wood; Jay Shinn, Chair SAINT FRANCIS GUILD Starting this summer, Father Courtney convinced me to help out with some of our ministries in the plant kingdom. Peggy Allen continues to do a tremendous job improving the landscape around Emmanuel, the rest of us came onboard to add a few hands and help extend her good work. The Men of Emmanuel provided the skill and labor needed for an extremely successful workday on September 25. And Peggy coordinated a successful plant sale on October 23rd and 30th. Bermudagrass, Zoysia and lots of mulch now cover most of the bare spots towards the front of the church. We also added 6 large Chinese Loropetalum shrubs which should greet us each spring with a profusion of pink flowers. As for the future - much planning, planting, pruning, pulling, pouring and praying lie ahead. Frank Henning, Chair List of Suitable Memorials (AGM) There are many ways to honor a loved one, remember those past, or celebrate special events in our lives. The Architecture, Gifts, and Memorials (AGM) Committee is charged annually with preparing a list of memorials suitable for Emmanuel. Presently, the list includes but is not limited to these memorials:
If you wish to discuss a gift, contact the clergy, vestry members, or AGM committee members. Although there is no restriction on the number of gifts which can be made In memory of or In honor of an individual, it is the custom at Emmanuel that only one of the gifts may be inscribed. The Guidelines, approved by the vestry, November 2001, charge the AGM committee with review of all gifts, plans, and specifications for the development, improvement, alteration or repair of church properties with a view to maintaining the architectural integrity of the properties and to assure good quality of design, materials, and workmanship in the execution of all such improvements and repairs. Architectural integrity involves any change in existing material, design, color, or location associated with building exteriors, interiors, and grounds. A full description of all tangible gifts (cash, memorial, or otherwise) are submitted to this committee for review prior to acceptance by Emmanuel Church. The Committee presents its findings along with its recommendations to the vestry. The vestry shall decide whether or not the gift shall be accepted and the project can proceed. |
