Spiritual Formation

Programs for Adults

There are several formation possibilities offered during the Christian Education period on Sundays.

Fora

Usually there are two classes or fora offered during the school year. There is an Adult Education Committee that arranges the schedule. Please use the "Schedules" tab in the main menu above this text to see what is on tap this week. On the first Sunday of every month the Vestry meets with the parish in the Common Room for an exchange of ideas and questions.

Natural Spirituality

Emmanuel’s Natural Spirituality Program will offer its review-of-the-basics series this fall during the Christian Education hour, beginning Sunday morning, September 16, at 9:30 in the Parlor.  Natural Spirituality is the area of Christian life in which we learn to put on our “parable” ears in order to listen to God through events in our daily lives and images in our nightly dreams.  We call this inner work.  As we develop our “ears to hear,” we find ourselves on an intensified journey with Christ toward health and wholeness. More.

Men of Emmanuel

MOE is an informal group dedicated to bible study and discussion that meets during the normal Sunday school hour. A new Bible passage is discussed each week in an open forum. There are no Bible scholars in this group, and due to the amount of discussion, we proceed quite slowly. Therefore, it is easy for new people to join at any time. More.

There are also several groups that meet at other times during the week.

Monday Morning Bible Study

A group of men and women meet from 11:00 to 12:30 on Monday morning in the big room in the building at 540 Prince Ave to reflect on the scripture readings for the following Sunday. It is a relaxed time of shared learning, reflection, prayer and fellowship. Led by Fr. Robert. You are invited to drop in any time. The readings for the following Sunday are published in the Sunday Bulletin and posted to the "News" page of this web site.

Natural Spirituality

Emmanuel’s Natural Spirituality Program, begun in 1991, provides a context for incorporating inner work—attention to dreams and synchronicity (meaningful coincidence)— into Christian life. While this approach to spirituality is new for our time, it is not new for Christianity. In the Bible dreams were crucial ingredients in the spiritual lives of men and women of faith, including Jacob, Joseph, and Daniel in the Old Testament, and Mary, Joseph, Peter, and Paul in the New Testament. In the Book of Acts there are numerous accounts of early Christians being guided both by dreams and by meaningful coincidence. Emmanuel’s Natural Spirituality Program offers the modern tools of Jungian psychology for gaining awareness of this naturally occuring flow of the Holy Spirit through the ordinary life of every individual.

You can learn more about Natural Spirituality. Please consult the schedules page to see when the several dream groups meet.

Education for Ministry

The seminar group is the nucleus of the Education for Ministry program. A group consists of six to twelve participants and a trained mentor who meet weekly over the course of a nine-month academic year. These meetings are usually from two and a half to three hours in length. Through study, prayer, and reflection, EfM groups move toward a new understanding of the fullness of God's kingdom.
